Mackis found himself serving as one of the queen's guards, despite being Princess Elise's confidant. His loyal friends, who had followed him to Burlington, were now among the men providing food for the refugee community. With his wealth, strength, and the trained soldiers he had brought from Norton's outskirts, he could have offered substantial help to the beleaguered queendom. Yet he chose not to, viewing it as a form of punishment for the queen.

However, each time he contemplated vengeance, he found his heart aching inexplicably for Queen Martyna. She was a woman of delicate beauty, and despite his many chances to end her life, he found himself unable to do so.
