CHAPTER 35
THE SHUNABIANS
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
PSALMS 46:1
The people of Burlington had narrowly escaped their enemies, but their trials were far from over. They were wounded, thirsty, and hungry. Along the way, several of the severely injured men, women, and children succumbed to their wounds, their losses mourned with wails of despair. Those who were still able-bodied helped the weak.
Palace soldiers, servants, and civilians began to construct a makeshift camp in a remote wilderness on the outskirts of Burlington. Large tents were erected for women and children, while another was designated for the injured and those needing medical attention. Smaller, camouflaged tents were set up on a nearby highland for the strong men who were capable of hunting for food.
