High school is all about love. The thrill of new romance and the pain of first heartbreaks. Everyone wants to find their special someone or get rid of them if they're not so special anymore. It's incredible how couples can go from being inseparable to acting like strangers in weeks. It's always fun to watch. Well, not for me. My life is anything but fun or peaceful right now. Mimi, my best friend, walks around the room like a caged animal, mumbling to herself about something I know has to do with love. Or rather, the lack of it.
She keeps saying things like 'I have to dump him, he's so annoying...' and other words I can't repeat here. Ugh! It's the season of break-ups, and everyone is busy figuring out how to end their relationships with their boyfriends or girlfriends.
Mimi is no exception. She's in a dilemma about how to break up with Lander, her current boyfriend. Poor Mimi, you might say. Well, don't. She brought this upon herself when she agreed to date him.
'Hey! Stop pacing around; you're distracting me.' I said, trying to focus on the novel I was reading. 'What should I do, Fei? He's driving me crazy. He's too clingy and obsessive.
I can't breathe with his love. I want out. It's so embarrassing and uncomfortable to be with him.' She continued her rant, ignoring me. I rolled my eyes. Why should I care? She was the one who said yes to him in the first place. She was the one who fell for his looks and charm. She was the one who enjoyed his attention and affection. And now she's the one who wants to get rid of him. How fickle can she be?
'What do you want me to say? You made your bed; now lie in it. I don't want any part of this drama. Leave me alone.' I said, turning back to my novel. I'm sick and tired of this love game. I'm exhausted from listening to her complaints and playing the mediator between them. I want a peaceful high school life. Is that too much to ask?
'But seriously, did he have to make a cover song for me? I know he's studying music; we're all music students here. But do we go around making cover songs for each other? No! We don't. So why did he do that? I can't even walk freely in school anymore. Every time that song is played, everyone stares at me. It's so humiliating.' She said, still pacing. Did I mention that Lander made a cover song for Mimi? He used a popular song called 'Angela' by Kuami Eugene, a famous musician and TV personality.
This song was a hit among high school kids. But that wasn't the only cover he made for her. He also produced 'Odo (Love)' by Kidi and 'Thunder' by Kidi. He was really into her. Or maybe he was showing off his skills. Either way, it was impressive. Or it would have been if Mimi had appreciated it. But she didn't. She hated it. She hated his songs, his voice, his face, his everything. She didn't love him at all. She never did. She only liked him for his looks and his status. He came from a wealthy family with a famous uncle, a dancehall/reggae star. Or so the rumours said. Nobody knew for sure.
Lander loved Mimi with all his heart, but she didn't love him back. And in a relationship like that, there's only one way it can end: badly. I'm not ready for the drama that will follow their break-up. And it's starting to get on my nerves too. Sigh! I want a peaceful high school life. Is that too much to ask? Apparently, it is. Because as soon as I finished that thought, the door slammed open, and Lander walked in with a guitar and a smile. He looked at Mimi and said:
'Hey babe, I have a surprise for you.' And then he started singing: 'You are my Angela...'
