Chapter Fourteen

#Chapter Fourteen

Sunlight poured down on her body as she wandered about her garden. Where was Lachlan? She had wanted to talk to him about something during the night of the dance, but her nerves gave out in the end. He was nowhere to be found. She looked behind this bush or that hedge and found air instead. She paced about when the idea struck her.

He was probably at his shed.

She left the garden and wandered far out into the field. Her heels were digging into the grass and as she wandered further and further in, the ground began to turn into mud. She pried her feet from the ground and set it forcefully before the other as she walked. In the distance, her heart leapt when she saw Lachlan approaching her. He was waving his hands widely, his mouth repeatedly gaping open. She tried to hear what he was saying, tried to read his lips but she had no idea what he was saying until she neared him.

"Don't come here!" Lachlan yelled at her.

"Why?" Serene yelled back as she continued moving forward. She wasn't about to listen to some servant, especially not to this man. She walked towards him, Lachlan still moving his hands wildly and that was when it happened.

Her heel caught in the mud. She tried to lift her legs but they only sank further in. Her calves began to sink into the mud as Lachlan sped over. Her hand waved in the air and he stopped before the patch of mud.

Quicksand!

"I told you to stop, Serene!"

"How dare you - " she said as she sank further down.

"Wait," Lachlan said as he stepped gingerly near the mud. Clutching onto her hand, he dragged her bit by bit out to the other side of the quicksand. They were firmly on the patch of grass when they tumbled over, with him on top of her. His hands were on either side of her head, his body flush against hers as her inner thighs tingled. Her breath hitched as he hovered over her, mouth close to hers.
