Chapter Forty-Nine

#Chapter Forty-Nine

Serene returned to Dalgaco after that and when she was back, her employer suddenly told her on her next day of work that she was no longer needed, because machines had replaced her skills entirely. She trudged out of the factory and walked down the street

How was she going to feed herself now? She was a woman and though she was educated, all of it was informal and she did not have papers to prove it. Besides, all her skills were becoming obsolete. She needed to find a husband, and as that thought rose in her mind, hatred wracked her body over the idea of it. She had a husband once, and it did not end well. She was not going to try again.

So she wandered the streets after a colleague of hers told her that she could find job posters near the town market. When she reached the place where they put job advertisements up, a certain piece of paper caught her attention.

It was boldly announcing that Landon, the mysterious, wealthy merchant wanted to hire a servant, and he was willing to pay generously. Something stirred in Serene and she removed the poster from the board, intent on never letting another person see it. She kept it in her pocket and the next day, she turned up for the job interview.
