Chapter 30: An Unwelcome Gift

Kyon POV

Kyon exhaled long and blissfully once Marcus and the Hemmings had left the room.

Marcus didn’t reveal his act of self-sacrifice, but Kyon vowed not to underestimate him based on what he’d just seen. Marcus had behaved with grace and poise, and rejected the gossip in the pack! Kyon would have to be on his toes.

Dane draped an arm around him, bringing him out of his thoughts, and looked into his eyes. “I don’t know whether to chase you around the training area until you drop or promise to do your chores around the house for a week.”

Kyon suddenly felt aware of everyone in the room exhaling in relief, of Jiro rustling the official papers, and of Patch cracking a joke softly. “It’ll be fine,” he said. “I think our worries are behind us.”

Aunt Ilya marched right up to him and stuck her finger in his nose. “I ought to sit on you the next time you get one of these outlandish ideas.”

“Marcus said it was good diplomacy,” Jiro answered her, looking impressed.
