Chapter 44 : The Calf Pull I

Oliver

As it stood, I could barely see my own hand in front of my face, let alone Lucas. I had the easier job, too, following Lucas’ trail to the barn where the pregnant cow would soon calf.

Ethan and Mila are going to take care of it. They’re good at this sort of thing. It sure was inconvenient of that cow to pull this right in the middle of the Blizzard of the Century, though.

I inched forward carefully, using my hand to shield my face from the snow.

You’d think that the barn would block some of the wind, at least.

My hand touched the weathered timbers of the barn at last. I shivered, in spite of my many layers of clothing.

Lucas and Oliver went to work opening the heavy doors. The timbers creaked in the wind, bending under the combined forces of men and weather. The doors gouged a deep faultline through the snow as they opened.

“Fuck me, that was tough.”

Lucas took off his hat for a moment and wiped the sweat from his brow.

“But you’re so big, Lucas.”
