But Darius did disappear a fortnight later and the one after that until Dana had come to anticipate that she should not expect to see him on a fortnightly basis. It took three full months before Dana was able to connect the dots. When three days of his fortnight had passed and he reported to her room as usual, she said to him, "if you need not tell me the reason for your disappearance, I will never speak to you again."

Darius raised an eyebrow wondering if that was meant to be a threat.

"I can do without you, you know," she said folding her hands.

"Very well, shall I leave this instant?" he asked.

"So you'll rather not be in my company than tell me?"

"Yes," came his reply.

"I think I've figured it out," said Dana watching the boy who was no longer timid. She was proud of herself, she had trained him well.
