Uncle Wang, who lived at the east end of the village, was known for his hard work. He had faced many hardships in life, including the loss of his wife during a famine.
Despite the difficulties, he managed to raise his son on his own and eventually built a house for him and arranged his marriage.
Tragically, just a year after his son's marriage, a terrible accident took his life when he fell into a ditch and his head hit a rock. To make matters worse, his daughter-in-law remained childless and decided to remarry a year later.
This left Uncle Wang feeling lonely with two houses in his possession, one of which was currently vacant, once belonging to his late son.
Tang Li and Yi Minghuan approached Uncle Wang's house, calling out "Uncle Wang" several times at the gate, but received no response.
"Is he asleep? Should we come back tomorrow?" Tang Li asked Yi Minghuan.
Although it wasn't even 8 o'clock in the evening, people in those days went to bed early due to the exhausting farm work and lack of entertainment activities. They usually turned in after dinner.
"I noticed the door is open, and even if he's asleep, he should have woken up with our loud calls," Yi Minghuan remarked, urging Tang Li to enter the house, assuring her that everything would be fine.
Thinking that an elderly man like Uncle Wang living alone might be in trouble, Tang Li pushed Yi Minghuan into the house.
They hurriedly walked to the door and peered inside. Under the moonlight, Tang Li spotted a figure lying on the ground and exclaimed, "Uncle Wang!"
Yi Minghuan's face froze, and he rushed to help him up. Upon closer inspection, they found white foam around his mouth, and he was unconscious.
"Could it be... poisoning?" Yi Minghuan asked, deeply concerned.
Tang Li rushed forward, recognized a bowl of ginkgo fruit on the table, and understood that it was ginkgo poisoning causing Uncle Wang's condition.
The amount he had consumed must have been extremely high for it to be this serious.
"It's poisoning, ginkgo poisoning," Tang Li confirmed, as she quickly checked Uncle Wang's pulse, which was weak and hanging by a thread.
Yi Minghuan, upon hearing that ginkgo had caused the poisoning, immediately picked up Uncle Wang and rushed outside to take him to the infirmary.
"Wait! Uncle Wang can wait to go to the infirmary. Help him up, and I'll make him vomit first!" Tang Li stopped him abruptly, her tone anxious yet forceful.
Yi Minghuan looked at her in surprise and said, "Would it work if he vomits? Can he be cured then?"
Tang Li urged him to trust her, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. "Just trust me or someone is going to die!"
She pulled him aside, opened Uncle Wang's mouth, and induced vomiting by pressing the root of his tongue.
"vomit!"
Uncle Wang expelled a large amount of foul-smelling vomit, some of which splattered onto Tang Li's clothes. Yi Minghuan, repelled by the smell, stepped back and held his breath, but Tang Li remained focused on the task at hand.
"Go fetch some water and find eggs, hurry!" Tang Li instructed Yi Minghuan as she patted Uncle Wang's back and pressed his abdomen accupoint to make him continue to vomit.
Yi Minghuan, noticing Uncle Wang's labored breathing, realized that Tang Li's method was effective.
He followed her instructions, lit a kerosene lamp, and fetched a thermos pot. He quickly poured a glass of water and handed it to her.
Tang Li took the water, fed it to Uncle Wang, gave him acupressure, and began the process of inducing vomit once again.
Yi Minghuan stood by, now able to see Tang Li's actions and expressions clearly thanks to the lamp's light.
He was left stunned by the determination and competence she displayed in this dire situation...
