Chapter - 72 - Her Natal Home

When the two of them returned home, it was already well past noon. They neatly stashed away the items they had purchased, and Yi Minghuan set to work preparing a simple meal using the ground corn and sorghum noodles.

With their hunger satisfied, they gathered the gifts they had bought, including the cloth, rock candy, and eggs, to bring back to Tang Li's mother's house.

Tang Li's natal home wasn't too far from Xia Village, where Yi Minghuan lived. It took about half an hour to reach it by bicycle.

They hadn't informed her family of their visit, so when they arrived at the doorstep, they found the door shut, with no one in sight.

"It seems like they're out in the fields," Tang Li remarked, deep in thought. "Why don't you wait here, and I'll go to the fields to find them."

"I'll come with you. Hop on, and show me the way," Yi Minghuan suggested, patting the back seat of the bicycle.

"Alright. You ride ahead, and turn left at the intersection," Tang Li instructed as she took her seat. With that, Yi Minghuan pedaled off, and the bicycle glided forward.

Following Tang Li's guidance, it didn't take more than five minutes for them to reach the farmland.

An older woman noticed Tang Li and, with a curious look on her face, glanced at Yi Minghuan, who was riding the bicycle.

She greeted Tang Li cheerfully, "Oh, look who's back! Is this your husband you've brought with you? He's quite tall and handsome!"

Tang Li hopped off the bicycle, smiling at the woman, and proudly proclaimed:

"Yes, he's my man! He just returned from the army, and I wanted to introduce him to my parents. Auntie, do you know which field my parents are working in?"

The woman eagerly pointed out the location. After thanking her, Tang Li hopped back on the bike, urging Yi Minghuan to pedal quickly. As they moved away, they could still hear the whispers of the woman and others behind them:

"Oh, back in the day, everyone was skeptical about Li's prospects for marriage. But look at the fine young man she's married now! I saw him bring a whole basket of gifts to his mother-in-law's house this time!"

Tang Li found it amusing and couldn't resist poking Yi Minghuan's back.

She whispered with a grin, "See how great you are! All the aunts and ladies are praising you, saying that the man I married is wonderful! Do you know how charming you are?"

Yi Minghuan was taken aback by the sudden poke and mumbled, "I didn't know." Her poking made him stiffen and wobble on the bike, nearly causing it to snake off course.

"Hey, ride more steadily!" Tang Li gasped, startled by his near tumble. She instinctively reached out to grasp his waist for support.

"...Don't hold on so tight; I'll lose my balance," Yi Minghuan advised, his voice shaky.

Tang Li blushed at his words and quickly let go, making a face behind his back. She muttered to herself that she wouldn't have had to hold on if he hadn't been riding so unsteadily.

After a few hundred meters, Tang Li spotted her parents and younger brother in the fields. A surge of excitement washed over her, and she couldn't contain herself.

She jumped off the bicycle, waving her arms and shouting towards the field:

"Dad! Mom! Little Brother!"

As she yelled, Tang Li realized she might be overreacting. She bit her lip, understanding that part of her elation was due to the original owner's emotions but also because she had no family in her previous life.

Now she had three close relatives related to her by blood. Even though she hadn't met them yet, the mere thought of it filled her with immense joy.

"Li, Li'er?!" Lin Zhenya, Tang Li's mother, heard the commotion, looked up from her work, and saw her daughter.

Her eyes welled up with tears, and she exclaimed in surprise, "That's my baby! It's Li'er! Our daughter has returned!"

Shouting, Lin Zhenya dropped the hoe she had been holding and rushed towards Tang Li with sheer delight on her face...
