I stared at the wolf that had just spoken. It sounded almost too good to be true, and I waited for the moment that they said they were lying, or playing a joke. A cruel joke. But it didn’t come.
“What?” Marisol asked. “Why is he—” She cut herself off before she could even finish it. “You know what, never mind, let him come in. He’s saving us a messenger to his territory in any case.”
I wondered how Varon had gotten this far into the territory, I wondered if he had killed anyone to get here. And I found that I didn’t care.
The wolf turned away from Marisol and headed in the direction of the door of the Alpha Hall, probably to let Varon in.
It was an excruciating few minutes, waiting to see if he would come in. Would he talk to me? Would he even look at me? I had no way of knowing the answers to these questions. But that didn’t stop my mind from running wild as we waited for Varon to come in.
