Chapter 18: Back in the City

I scrubbed my face in the bathroom before shutting off the water and looking at myself in the mirror. The bags beneath my eyes were finally starting to fade. I gave my reflection a tentative smile.
I’d been staying with Jack for a couple of nights now, and it was doing wonders for my sleep. It was comforting to know that Jack was just down the hall from me when I retired for the night. I slept for a full eight hours both nights I was here. For the first time in more than six months, I felt truly safe.
I pulled a brush through my tangled, red bird’s nest, and changed into a blue and white striped button-up and gray jeans before wandering into the kitchen.
Jack was at the stove in the kitchen, already dressed in his usual work clothes consisting of black dress pants and a long-sleeve shirt. His button-up was gray this time, instead of his usual white.
He turned to face me and I couldn’t help the giggle that burst from my lips.
