Chapter 42: Don’t You Dare Fake It

The first thing that my brain registered, when I started to regain consciousness, was pain. A lot of it. And it was everywhere. My head throbbed and the muscles of my limbs were sore. I flexed very slightly and found that just about every part of my body felt as if it had been beaten with a meat cleaver.
The second thing I noticed was that I couldn’t move, and not just because of the immense pain I was in. There was something wrapped around my wrists and ankles. I tugged against them and found that it hurt to do so as if they were too tight and digging into my skin.
A whimper escaped my lips and I opened my eyes.
Wherever I was, it was dark and cold. I shivered and blinked at the world above me, squinting as my eyes adjusted to the odd dim lighting.
The room I was in was large, the ceiling high. The walls were gray and I could barely make out the thin poles of scaffolding against the ceiling.
