Twenty Four

Surprisingly enough, Avery did show up later that day when I was getting my bike out of the lock.

He had his hands shoved deep in his pockets, his earbuds in as he wordlessly stood a few feet away from me.

"Oh, hey. You came."

"Of course. I promised," he stated matter-of-factly. Okay, someone sounds a little prissy.

"You don't actually have to. I'm sure Anya won't tell her dad."

"No, it's fine. I don't want to risk you getting in trouble because of me."

"Oh... Well," I rubbed the back of my neck, muttering, "Thanks."

He only shrugged. "Let's go."

After walking quietly for a few minutes, I awkwardly pursed my lips. "So uh... Back there at the lab... That wasn't what it-" I paused, noticing he didn't react to my words in the slightest. Both of his earbuds were shoved in his ears, and his eyes were only looking straight ahead. Um, excuse me, rude. "Ave? Hellooo?"

Slowly, a smirk formed on his face, "I can hear you."
