Chapter 33: No Sudden Moves

From the moment Reesa walked out of Casa Sartori, her parents’ voices echoed from somewhere in the past, reminding her that danger didn’t care about her feelings. She hadn’t heeded that warning on her last nighttime foray and, despite its positive outcome, didn’t want a repeat performance. So, her vigilance on high, she knocked on Federico’s door, and when he agreed to help without question, she was relieved.

Panificio Sartori had three levels under its roof. The first was the bakery itself, the second was an apartment for tourists during peak season, and the third was where Cora lived and entertained guests. Reesa’s destination was the second level.

“Thank you for this,” she said when they arrived.

“Any time, bella,” Federico said. Those were his first words since leaving his house. Looking at her much like Aldo might’ve, he added, “I don’t know what’s going on, but I pray it works out.”

With a rush of gratitude, she thanked him again, and they parted ways.
