Chapter 76: Marbles

Sister Paula instructed me to sit down in a chair by her desk, while Sister Rochelle left us alone, closing the door to Sister Paula's office behind her.

"You are the spitting image of her," Sister Paula said. "Your mother."

"How do you know that I am her daughter? What if it's just a coincidence that I look like her?" It was too easy to accept this. I have been disappointed too many times before; I will not get my hopes up for something that might not be true.

Sister Paula didn't look phased by my skepticism. She was as calm and firm in her belief as bamboo growing firm in its soil, the wind only gently rocking it back and forth without it breaking.

"Dearest child, it is not a coincidence. May Lee is indeed your mother."

I gasped. "May Lee?"

Sister Paula nodded, sitting upright with the best posture I have ever seen a person manage. For a lady her age, her posture was better than many people younger than myself.
