"Have dinner with us".
I said calmly as she was already upset. I know I had no reason to be nice to her, but seeing her this sad made me feel equally sad. Why? I had no idea.
"Ha!! No thanks. I'm not ready to give you the opportunity to see me at my lowest".
She replied making me rethink my decision.
"You know, for someone who is feeling so sad, you definitely still have the opposite mouth to go with it".
I said, determined not to let her have the last word. Since she wasn't in the mood for dinner, I turned to leave but then, I heard her speak again.
"What are you guys having for dinner"?
She asked with tears still rolling down her eyes. She looked innocent and cute, I couldn't help but smile.
"Why do you care? You said you didn't want to eat".
I answered back but instead of answering me, she moved closer to me and touched her tummy saying.
"I'm kinda hungry you know".
The way she kept rubbing her belly and looking at it made me laugh without knowing. I could not help the laughter that found its way to my face as I looked at her.
She stopped rubbing her tummy and looked at me with an embarrassed face.
"Why are you laughing"?
She asked
"Sorry... sorry... Haha... you look so funny".
"Stop laughing".
She said and looking at her, I could tell that she was very embarrassed.
"Fine, I apologize. Let's go in, they'll be waiting".
We then went in to have dinner. Dinner was quiet but comfortable. No one gave Anita any negative or bad looks and it made me respect this family even more. They weren't just wealthy, they were also very logical and understanding.
When we were done, Grandpa called for a family meeting. I know I wasn't needed so I excused myself. Kay also went upstairs to play games since it was a meeting for elders only.
I decided to go outside and look around. I was still looking around the backyard when I saw Anita sitting on a swing.
"I thought you left already".
I said but then, she turned around and looked at me as though she had been caught stealing. Anita immediately stood up and said.
"Ohh, uhm... I was just on my way".
She said but I ignored her and went to sit on the swing. It was a pretty big swing that looked like it could take about three people at once so there was enough space on it.
When I was seated, I looked at the young beautiful, and confident lady that was now standing in front of me like a cat drenched in the rain.
"What are you thinking about"?
I asked making her raise her head to look at me.
"Huh"?
She asked and then, I patted on the other side of the swing.
"Sit".
I said and although she looked hesitant, she finally sat.
"So, care to tell me what you are thinking about"?
I asked again but she answered me with a question.
"Why are you doing this"?
She asked but I didn't quite get her question so I tilted my head to the side showing that I didn't understand.
"Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about".
She said and this time around, I replied.
"I don't".
I answered back.
"Why are you being so nice to me? We both know that I've been nothing but rude to you since the first day we met and although we've only met a few number of times, I've only tried to make things harder for you".
I nodded
"Well, I'm glad we can both agree on what you just said".
I said as I totally agreed with what she said. She has indeed always been a b*tch and I never liked her.
"So why, why are you being so nice to me"?
She asked as she sat on the swing, looking at me, waiting for an honest answer.
"If I'm being honest, I have no idea".
I said and that was the honest truth. She didn't look like she liked my reply but that was it.
"I don't believe you".
She said. I looked at her and she continued speaking.
"I know I have nothing to offer right now besides, I'm the rotten fruit of the family".
"When you put it like that, I almost feel like I shouldn't be talking to you right now".
She smiled lightly while looking forward but I turned to look at her and I must admit, she looks really beautiful and innocent when she smiles.
"But you know what"?
I asked and she turned to look at me.
"Deep down, I couldn't help to see you in a difficult situation. I'm not much of a humanitarian but I felt hurt when I saw you earlier".
I didn't know why I was telling her all this, but I decided to be honest about how I felt and then, I heard her scoff.
"Tchh, I don't believe you".
I smiled at her words.
"Well, I don't believe myself either".
I said which was pretty much the truth.
"I don't like my elder sister".
She said out of the blue which made me turn to look at her. I said nothing, she just looked at me, turned back, and kept talking.
"When I saw you walking towards me today, I wished you were my elder sister".
She looked at me with a sad smile plastered on her face.
"But you're not, Melissa is".
She said it in a regretful tone.
"I can treat you like my sister, that is... if you want me to".
I had already spoken before I called myself to order and spoke in my mind.
'Nadia? What is wrong with you? What exactly do you think you are doing'?
I asked myself. I wasn't expecting myself to like her so quickly, given our past experience. I was still thinking about my words when I heard her laugh gently.
"Haha, are you already regretting your own words".
She asked
"Mind reader".
I replied jokingly.
"There is so much I want to talk to you about, big sis".
