Megan:

“Okay, everyone, why don’t you take a seat? Dinner will be out in a second.” After the table was set, my husband and I took our seats, glancing at Alex and his parents. “We have something important to share with you all, but I think it would be better if we did this after dinner. So, let’s eat.” While we dug into the food, someone’s phone began to ring. “Alex, what have I told you about your phone during dinner?” His mom scolded him. “Sorry, Mom, but it’s Mary. I have to pick up, okay?”

Picking up the phone on speaker, Alex greeted his sister. “Hey, sis, what’s up? Hope everything is fine.” Mary’s voice echoed through the room, carrying a sense of urgency. “No, Alex, everything is not fine. I’m calling to let you know that Julie was admitted to the hospital.”

Alex’s expression shifted from casual to concerned in an instant. “Oh my God, what happened? How come?”
