CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

We've lost eleven students and three counselors.
It might seem like a small number, but the loss is heavy.
The meeting with Director Yearwood has been pushed back to this afternoon. She's been busy with trying to reinforce the shields. It seems one of the counselors recognized an individual from the Black Wreath group, a guardian of all people. For the organization to have recruited a guardian is a huge blow. Guardians never take sides.
From what I've managed to gather, he is the guardian of rats.
The students who are unharmed have been tasked with capturing any rat they see so that they can be released on the mainland.
"So, how is she doing?" I ask Beth, leaning against the door of the infirmary.
It's a pointless question since I can see the black veins covering Kathleen's arm.
"Stabilized," Beth murmurs, hollowly. "But that's it. No changes. The poison isn't stopping. Any word from your-"
I shake my head.
