CHAPTER TEN
Winter
It's a bear.
My mind goes blank as I stare into the eyes of the beast. Its fur is matted, and its claws are long, glinting in the dim light. I can see its hot breath fogging up the air as it snarls at me.
"Move!" Alec pushes me to the side and flies through the air toward the animal, his vampire teeth glinting in the moonlight.
I watch in shock as Alec tackles the bear, the two of them rolling around in the dirt. I can hear the bear's growls and Alec's grunts as they fight for dominance.
Rushing forward, I take advantage of the bear's exposed back and push it off of Alec. With super strength being one of my abilities, it feels like pushing a limp dog.
The bear gets to its feet and whirls around to face me, its eyes bright and angry.
And still red.
A rock forms in my gut.
"There's something off about this bear," I say.
"You're right about that." Alec gets to his feet.
The bear is circling us, growling again, drool dripping down its face.
