CHAPTER ELEVEN
Winter
"Winter. Wake up."
I bolt to sitting, my hands clenched, ready to fight. "What is it? What's happening?"
Alec crawls into the tent. "It's morning. We should get going."
I blink, noticing the filtered light around me. "You didn't wake me up. I was supposed to take a turn watching."
He shakes his head. "It's fine. I couldn't sleep anyway."
"No, it's not." I'm more annoyed with myself than with him. If I'd had my phone with me, I could have set an alarm. Instead, I slept through the whole night and left him to sit up alone.
I know he's a vampire and is comfortable in the dark, but he must be exhausted.
He's already rolling up his sleeping bag. "I see some smoke west of here. Maybe a couple of miles away."
"Great." I jump up and start packing. Smoke means a house or a camp, and both of those things mean people.
People who might have seen the missing students.
