CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

The next day, as soon as I get a break from my regular tasks, I knock on Nora's office door.
"Come in," she calls.
Opening the door, I find her seated at the desk, a fresh cup of coffee and her open computer in front of her.
"Good morning." I close the door behind me. "Have you spoken to security yet?"
The new security team at Hawthorn--composed mostly of rotating Guild members--takes threats to the school seriously. If Nora spoke with them about Owen Markham possibly taking the scrolls, surely they'll take action.
Nora hesitates. "Yes. I did. Unfortunately, we can't just go rifling through staff members' belongings without evidence. That directly goes against Guild regulations."
I inhale sharply, more than a little displeased at the answer. These scrolls are insanely expensive, and if Owen gets away with taking them, that will send a message to other thieves. A message that Hawthorn Academy is ripe for the picking.
