In his life he had known moments of happiness,

but only in these flickering instants had his life amounted to anything, there was no thread of happiness running through his years. Now, as night fell and he sat alone in dark luxurious room of his substantial house overlooking the bay, he was only too painfully aware of where he stood in the scheme of things. For today, he had met with his Wife.

Sitting here now, immersed in his pain, he admitted to himself that he should never have arranged the meeting, no good could possibly come of it, but his regular clandestine visits to the place where she lived had gnawed at his insides till he succumbed to temptation.

Through his contacts, he had arranged for his Wife’s bank manager to ask to see her about her account. However, when she called at the bank she was shown into a private room and asked to wait. After a few moments, a man walked in whom she did not at first recognise.
