The phone rang on Jim Barton’s desk. Slightly irritated, Jim stopped working on his latest piece for The Times ‘Insight’ team, grabbed the phone and growled.

“Yes?”

The male voice on the other end of the line

seemed unfazed by Jim’s brusque manner - the caller was Tom Parkins from Cazenove, the up- market City brokers.

“Jim, it’s Tom here - I’ve been looking at this Germaine Rouse business as you asked me to - I can’t for the life of me see how they can justify the returns they claim, it’s just not feasible”.

“Do you know what you’re saying to me?” said Jim, incredulous and interested now.

“Of course I do,” said Tom, “But the returns they forecast aren’t just a little way off achievable, they’re miles out unless someone is carrying a loss”. “And we both know who that someone is, don’t we” said Jim, his voice suddenly serious.

“Well” said Tom, “They’re not running the whole show for charity, are they?”

Jim smiled cynically to himself.
