It was a sad day, one of the saddest of his life. It was the day he left love behind, the day he left Susan, for always through the glimpses of supreme happiness he had experienced in the last few months, he had been haunted by Jane’s face. Step by step the guilt had grown until he could bear it no longer. Something had to give, and it was their love.

This last morning in their bedroom had been one of the most traumatic days he could recall. He didn’t have to say anything, Susan could sense his dilemma as he paced the room from the very early hours. She looked at him sadly, but there was fear in her eyes.

“You’re bewildered, aren’t you?” she said, in pity as much as accusation. He couldn’t frame a reply. He felt lost, frightened, alone. The unfamiliarity of what was now his life was closing in on him, and much as he loved Susan, the darkness was overtaking him, the fear was overshadowing the love.
