Chapter 36

Boxy caught my eye, and his caterpillar eyebrows climbed his forehead. He'd noticed too.

"So." Detective Palmer settled himself in the chair next to my bed opposite Boxy. He clasped his hands across his lean belly. He looked slightly more relaxed than I'd ever seen him without his tie and the top two buttons undone on his black shirt. "You didn't kill Jake."

"No. I was innocent all along." I narrowed my eyes at him. "I bet you knew that before I was knocked into a trunk last night, right?"

He frowned. "That's right. The forensic report came back on that yellow jacket we found at your place, and there were a few hairs on it, all synthetic."

"A wig."

The detective nodded. "Likely the same one Celeste wore in the pictures you took."

Boxy leaned forward in his chair and wagged his finger at the detective. "Something tells me you knew Vic was innocent even before that."
