Chapter 50

Travis's once demon-possessed car purred to life. The sound made me smile. He must've thought I was smiling at him as he drove away because he grinned and waved.

I didn't wave back. He didn't need the encouragement. Besides, my hands were still clamped around my phone. The button taped to my skin dug into my sweaty palm.

The hearses continued sitting there idling. Were they watching me? Waiting for me to make a move? Launch into a hoedown in the parking lot?

Nah, it was much easier to stand here and do nothing.

A black Jeep Wrangler pulled into the gas station then and pulled up at the pump behind mine. Detective Palmer climbed out wearing the same suit as early this morning, except this time he wore his badge next to his gun holster. He hardly glanced my way as he gazed around the lot.
