BOOK TWO: HISSES, HEARSES, AND CURSES
The return trip to the animal hospital had been a bust. My note to Cass's ghost was gone. Even the flowers I bought her at the gift shop were missing. Weird. Feeling defeated, I'd gone back home.
As soon as I walked into my apartment, Studmuffin took one look at me from the window seat and flopped over on his back.
"Come here," he said begrudgingly.
"Yay!" I swooped in for a belly rub, which was exactly what I needed. His belly, not mine, although I could use one too.
"What happened?" he asked. "You look like a bird's nest in a hurricane."
"Gee, thanks." Frowning, I collapsed to the floor next to him and gently attacked his belly spots.
"I'll ask you once more - what happened?" He gave me a stern professor look, but it turned into a grin as he melted underneath my fingers.
"I warned Gran Black about potentially being murdered, and she basically said let them try. When I left her farm, the three hearses were following me."
