Chapter 64

"You have exactly three more than the 333 on the police station." He cut his gaze to me. "I wonder why that is."

"I wish I knew," I said with a shrug. "The number three seems to be on lots of people's minds lately."

He nodded. "It's almost been three days since the hearses appeared here. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that time is almost up for your town's little rat problem to become a big rat problem. Who do you think killed RaeRae?"

"It's hard to say. I've never met her," I told him.

"Surely you must suspect someone."

I opened my mouth then shut it again. Not Cass. An argument with her sister a week ago didn't mean anything. Still, she was the only person I knew of who might - big might - have a reason.

"I'm not sure," I finally said.

He rolled his eyes. "Mm-hmm."

My skin prickled like he'd just scrubbed sandpaper over it. Were my thoughts that obvious? Or was he just pressing all the wrong buttons on purpose?
