This time, I refused to let Chloe leave my sight.

It was the next morning, same as it had been for the last three days, and I pulled Bernadette to a stop in front of the police station.

As I pushed my door open, Chloe delicately cleared her throat, a not-so-subtle reminder for me to open her door for her. I ground my teeth together while pasting a fake smile on my face. Chauffeur Victoria, at her service.

"I sure hope this doesn't take long," she said as she climbed out. "I have so many things to do, so many people to see."

That would be awfully hard to do if she died again. Despite how I felt about her, it was up to me to make sure that didn't happen.
