Chapter 22

NYLA pinched her eyes as her head spun. Upon further movement, she discovered she was kneeling, resting on her heels. Her hands were restrained behind her, and any further movement worsened her pounding headache.

“Awake yet?” a voice asked ahead of her.

Rowan was leaning against the opposite wall. Nyla slowly opened her eyes and looked up at him, except it was not the Rowan she had come to know. The Rowan she knew was always smiling and cracking jokes. The person that stood before her now was as good as a stranger to her. A man with no emotion.

Nyla looked past him at her surroundings. Hard, grey stone walls greeted her from every side and began to look vaguely familiar.

“Yes, this is the Sage Rebels’ cave,” Rowan said. “My army hidden in the mountains.”

“You knew them from the start?” Nyla managed to ask.

“Yes. How do you think they found us in the first place, Petal?” Nyla thought back to the chasm she and Rowan fell into.
