How We Die

The problem with people, a big one, was that they made assumptions.

Unfortunately, Jasper Hawkin was one of those people who had made assumptions. At first he had assumed that being trusted to be the lookout when Gio Romano was blown up meant that the boss had seen how hard he worked and was looking to raise him through the ranks.

He had been very wrong on that. It had been a test, one that he had failed spectacularly all because Don Romano had gotten a call at the last second and moved away from the blast. For that particular failure, Jasper had gotten himself a brand new stab wound.

It should have been enough, he should have gotten the message and been on his merry way. Making sure to put as much distance between himself and the Red Don as possible. But like a moth to a flame, Jasper had been doomed from the start.

He had not run, again assuming that just because he had been stabbed and allowed to live, that he was safe.
