St. Mark's Square was bustling with life and color, like a floral composition in full bloom. People crowded the cobblestone streets, full of enthusiasm and admiration for the charm of Venice. Stalls set up in the square displayed their wares enticingly, from colorful silk dresses to sophisticated jewelry. Merchants extolled their wares, and crowds considered each purchase. Children ran around the square, eliciting laughter and smiles from passersby. Some of them used their dexterity to reach undetected for the delicious fruits on the merchants' stalls. When their petty thefts came to light, the merchants would erupt in loud curses, and the children would run away, holding their prey in their hands.
The buildings around the square displayed a variety of architectural styles, from Byzantine domes to Gothic towers. St. Mark's Cathedral rose proudly, decorated with golden mosaics and marble details. Its interior exuded majesty, attracting worshippers from all over the world. In the background resounded the music of street performers, who with their instruments added even more charm to the atmosphere. The smell of freshly baked pastries and coffee filled the air, tempting passersby to relax momentarily at a small table outside the cafe. St. Mark's Square was like a river of life, with an abundance of colorful characters, sounds and aromas like the true heart of Venice, teeming with life and history, delighting locals and visitors alike.
Women wore long, voluminous gowns that accentuated their Rubensian shapes sewn from luxurious materials such as silks, velvets and lace. The shape was usually based on the so-called " garde--robe à la française," characterized by a loose front of the gown that formed decorative folds to emphasize the bust and waist, while the back of the dress fell into a long train. Richly ornamented corsets helped maintain the correct shape of the body and what not where the ample bust. Hairstyles, on the other hand, were piled high and decorated with feathers, flowers or decorative pins. On heads were delicate veils or hats that added elegance.
Men dressed in elegant coats, called " justaucorps ", which were fitted to the body and usually buttoned. They were made of high-quality materials such as silks and often with belts and brocades. Under their coats they wore shirts with embroideries with embellishments and vests. Their hairstyles were usually short with delicate sideburns. And on the heads of the men one could spot three-brimmed hats, often decorated with feathers or bows.
Everyone took care to wear proper makeup. Women wore white powders on their faces and achieved a fair complexion, as well as delicate blushes and crimson lipsticks. Men, on the other hand, used powder to achieve a matte look on their skin. Their attire and appearance reflected the fashionable trends of the era, while emphasizing their social standing and elegance. Clergymen, meanwhile, wore ornate mitres, and monks wore traditional habits. The colors of the costumes of the Venetians were extremely intense and rich. Reds, purples, golds and blue hues predominated, giving the entire outdoor scene a unique colorfulness. However, the most surprising thing was how detailed people took care of their clothes. Every detail and piece of clothing was carefully designed and made, and the fabrics were of the highest quality.
They walked out of St. Mark's Cathedral and into a square that looked completely different from when they last saw it. All this made them feel completely foreign in this environment. Their contemporary clothes and appearance clearly distinguished them from the people of that period, which drew the eyes of passersby and aroused surprise. Luca surveyed his surroundings, trying to find some clues.
- How the hell did we get here? And by golly what year are we here! Or rather, the age?
- Actually, we were in a completely different period," Alessandra said, looking at the traffic and people's outfits.
As they strolled through the square, they could not help being fascinated by this magical atmosphere and the beauty of Venice. As they walked past a cafe, they heard the sounds of violins and guitars. A group of musicians were performing melodious songs, creating a pleasant contrast to the city's hustle and bustle. Alessandra, having a touch of romance about her, encouraged them to relax for a while at one of the tables. They ordered coffee and a piece of cake, enjoying a moment of peace.
- What the hell are you going to pay with? - threw a wry Luca
- With this," Alessandra said with stoic calm, tossing a few coins on the table.
- But where do you eat...but it doesn't matter...," muttered Luca then added, "Hunger is clouding my mind anyway.
- What the eyes do not see, the hands gain," Alessandra chuckled with a smile, letting it be known that she had robbed one of the passersby.
As they bantered, Alex spotted strange figures in the distance, heading for the cathedral. They seemed to be enchanted in time, and their costumes were even more elaborate and colorful than the ones they themselves wore. He recalled Brother Elias' stories about time and space, which made him look at the clerics with a completely different understanding.
- It's possible that the people who live here don't even realize what is being fucked up here. - he wondered aloud.
- It all seems surreal anyway," Luca added.
Alessandra, after her first sip of coffee, sighed with delight.
- This is just a coffee, I've never had one before. It tastes completely different from our time.
Luca, munching on a cake, conceded her point.
- But it has an amazing taste," adding with a full mouth, "Maybe we should take the recipe for these delicacies with us? Or with a few pieces to take away.
Alex, sipping his coffee, nodded.
- This is indeed the best we have drunk and eaten in a long time," adding after a while with a smile, "although to the hungry and old rusks a rarity.
In the shadow of the centuries-old cathedrals and the bustle of St. Mark's Square, while tasting the local delicacies, they still felt they were being watched. They began to notice shy glances and evasive gestures from the locals. It was as if people knew they were strangers. But what caught their attention most were the strange people who seemed to be following them. A man and a woman, dressed in long black coats that were somewhat outdated compared to the local attire. Their faces were covered by the shadow of wide-brimmed hats, and the only thing visible were their eyes, which stared at their every move.
Somehow their presence seemed unsettling, as if they had come from another era. He seemed the alpha of the couple, with a special aura and an intriguing beauty that both attracted and unsettled. His face was long and distinctively noble, yet foreign in features. He had a pale complexion that contrasted with his dark hair, which flowed down to his shoulders in wavy curls. His eyebrows were thick and defined, and his eyes were a deep blue color that seemed to penetrate the soul. However, what attracted the most attention were the wounds on his face. It had several dark marks and scars, forming an intricate pattern on his skin, as if someone had specially carved them there.
The companion also exuded extraordinary beauty with the figure of a model. She had long, bright hair that flowed down her back like a sheath of golden silk. Her face was oval and perfectly symmetrical, with high cheekbones that gave her definition. She was slightly more exposed than he was, and her complexion was accompanied by a subtle pink tan, which gave her a glow, and her lips were lusciously red and extremely tempting.
With a slight tremor in her voice, Alessandra, in a whisper, drew her friends' attention to the disturbing couple.
- Did you notice the strange couple? They seem to have been following us since we left the cathedral.
Alex looked through the corner of his eye toward the figure, trying not to betray his surprise.
- Yes, he has been watching them for some time. They look like someone who is clearly not from around here. This could be another sign that something is very wrong here.
- But you have to admit, the chick is hot. I wouldn't kick her out of bed," ejaculated Luca while continuing to munch on the cake.
- Seriously? You, as usual, either about gagging or shagging. Guys," Alessandra added ironically.
- What does it mean to ''smoke''? - asked the monk.
- It would be better if the brother did not get into it," added Alex looking grotesquely at Luce.
The three friends couldn't shake the feeling that the pair were out of this world, much less the era. They stared at them with a mixture of fascination and anxiety, wondering what they were hiding under their cloaks. They decided to watch their further steps, covering their own identities.
- You have to blend in with the crowd," Alex said looking at the residents.
- A few rags for a change of clothes will come in handy," Luca added.
- I suggest buying some with borrowed coins," smiled Alessandra, "I saw some places where you can buy something.
With the expression of a teenage girl delighted at the thought of shopping, she led them to a nearby store that offered all sorts of outfits.
The store was crowded because it was just a small and picturesque tailor store. The wooden door opened onto a narrow street. The modest facade was decorated with numerous hanging linen fabrics and lace. Above the door was a wooden sign with the hand-painted inscription "Fratelli Mauro Stilisti Veneziani."
Inside, the atmosphere was warm. The deep wooden beams of the ceiling were decorated with intricate patterns and ornaments that evoked the spirit of the Renaissance. Shelves and display cases were strewn with various fabrics, costumes and clothing accessories. In turn, samples of fabrics in a variety of colors and patterns hung on the walls, beckoning one to browse through the rich offerings. The store was filled with the pleasant smell of freshly baked goods, which were sold in one corner.
The vendors welcomed their companions with open arms and warm smiles. They were two brothers. Mauro, the older of the brothers, had warm, brown and smiling eyes that immediately lightened the atmosphere. His brother, Carlo, was a bit more serious, but equally helpful. Both wore traditional Venetian tailor's clothes, which seemed to be as carefully crafted as they were sewing. After a cordial greeting, the brothers proceeded to help select the right clothes for their new customers.
Mauro looked at Alessandra with appreciation, and his words were like the melody of a song.
- Madamigella, your beauty is as fantastic as it is extraordinary. I am sure we will find something special for you.
Carlo, on the other hand, turned to Alex and Luca with a smile.
- For your perfect bodies, we have many suggestions. Would you like to look more like Venetians, or perhaps like travelers? In our store we have a wide selection of traditional Venetian clothes and styles that are sure to appeal to gentlemen.
The brothers took great care and fashion sense to select outfits for Alex, Alessandra, Lucia and brother Elias. They started with Alessandra, trying to select something that would enhance her natural beauty and style. Mauro gave her several suggestions in which she could feel like a true Venetian lady. These included lightweight silk gowns in shades of gold and sea green, decorated with lace and embroidery that were characteristic of Venetian fashion of the time.
Carlo directed his attention to Alex and Luce, suggesting that they could dress more traditionally, like the residents of Venice. They prepared sets for them consisting of kaftans, slippers and Venetian hats. The men had a choice between more formal outfits and those more casual, suited to longer walks around Venice. Brother Elias, as a monk, chose to remain in his traditional habit, albeit one a bit more adapted to Venetian style. Brother Mauro offered him some changes that would preserve his humility, but at the same time introduce a subtle Venetian touch to his clothing.
Alex entered the alcove with a changing room first. As befits an experienced mercenary, he selected an outfit suited for field operations, but the garment still exuded masculine charm. On top, he wore a dark brown leather jacket. This jacket was decorated with seasoned details such as metal zippers and buttons. It also had numerous pockets where he could store his tools and equipment. Underneath it was a long-sleeved white shirt. It was slightly rolled up at the sleeves, which accentuated his musculature. The top, meanwhile, was slightly unbuttoned, revealing his muscular chest. The outfit was completed with dark pants made of sturdy leather. They were loose at the waist, but tapered toward the bottom, giving him freedom of movement while accentuating his trained legs. On top of them he wore tall boots with thick soles, ideal for rough terrain. They were also made of dark leather and seemed unwearable. At his side he carried a leather scabbard with a lock, in which he concealed his captured weapon. The appearance of the sword and the decorations on the scabbard suggested that it was no ordinary weapon, but rather something of much greater significance. His powerful physique gave the impression of being ready to act at any moment. He exuded confidence and experience, which added to his masculine charm and charisma. His attire was simultaneously practical and stylish, which perfectly suited his role as a mercenary searching for the Knowledge Stones in mysterious Venice.
He was followed by Luce. He donned a dark brown, slightly distressed jacket that was a bit too big in the shoulders, but fit his figure well. Under the jacket he wore a silky gold vest with delicate embroidery, giving him an elegant look. A cream lace shirt with a delicate collar trimmed with gold thread poked through underneath it, adding to its unique charm. In addition, he was wearing dark brown pants made of soft material, which were looser at the waist and tapered toward the bottom. They were decorated with subtly ornate buttons. On his feet he wore brown leather shoes that seemed comfortable for a long walk on the cobblestone streets. Luca selected an additional accessory in the form of a cream-colored silk handkerchief that gently protruded from his vest pocket. In his hand he held a wooden walking stick with an intricately carved handle. His long, dark hair was neatly combed back, with a few curls falling across his forehead, giving him a romantic look.
Brother Elias, on the other hand, remained faithful to his monastic habit, which was mildly modified. The cuffs of the habit were trimmed with lace in tones of white, symbolizing purity and tranquility. Gold stripes appeared on the coat, which paid homage to the traditions of Venice. He was dressed in modesty, but his habit now had a certain charm and elegance, which matched the environment of the monks in their Venice.
The longest to wait for herself was Alessandra. Her dress was a true masterpiece of tailoring and decorative art. Fitted at the waist, emphasizing the feminine silhouette, it unfolded downward, giving her a regal appearance. It was a typical cut for the Venetian style, which emphasized elegance and classicism. It was made of the highest quality silk, whose delicate sheen gave a unique elegance. The color of the fabric was subtle and saturated, reminiscent of the moon's reflection on the Venetian canals. The guiding color, on the other hand, was a deep shade of blue, which seemed to change shade depending on the light. The top was intricately decorated with uniquely textured lace depicting floral motifs and birds, and its delicacy contrasted with the depth of the dress' color. The embroidery on it formed subtle patterns that gave an extraordinary charm. The sleeves of the gown were long and airy, ending in wide cuffs. They were trimmed with delicate lace, which added a romantic touch. They fell freely towards the ground, making Alessandra look as if she was floating.
The most striking element of the dress was its long train. The train was decorated with intricate embroideries depicting the underwater world of the Adriatic Sea. Motifs of fish, aquatic plants and pearl shells created a magical landscape. It fell gently behind her, creating an aura of mystery and unique beauty. In this dress she looked like a Venetian princess, ready to embark on a grand adventure in magical Venice.
The outfits, made with the utmost precision and attention to detail, allowed the friends to blend into the Venetian scenery and take in the unique atmosphere of the city. The brothers, who accompanied them throughout the selection, were impressed by how perfectly they managed to fit strangers into the local fashion. Mauro, seeing Alessandra in an unearthly dress, could not take his eyes off her. He turned to the woman with delight.
- Madonna, you look like a real angel. It is such beautiful women that inspire us in our art.
Alex approached the counter to settle payment with coins that Alessandra borrowed from passersby. Looking through the display window, he asked with curiosity in his eyes.
- Excuse me, but what year exactly are we witnessing? We traveled for many weeks. Because of which our sense of time has become blurred. We've heard about the big event in Venice and are very intrigued if it's today.
Carlo, who had not yet had a chance to talk longer, replied with a smile.
- Oh, it is the Year of our Lord 1656 and we will be celebrating La Sensa," he continued like a skilled guide, "A unique event that is as important as Carnival. This is the time when the Venetian Republic made a symbolic vow to the Adriatic, reflecting its power and influence on the seas - he fell silent for a moment wandering with his thoughts in his past.
He saw a painting in them, and in it a talented tailor known throughout Venice, sitting at a desk in his studio, which he had set up in an old stone house in the heart of the city. The sun had already set behind the horizon, and the warm glow of candles illuminated the room, giving it a cozy atmosphere. Above the desk hung portraits of his family, who had lived in Venice for generations. It was here, in these nooks and crannies of the city, that his creations and stories were born. He remembered living in 1640, in a charming house by the canal, a young him whose imagination was no less fascinating than the one he created every day. His family, fascinated by the history of Venice, passed on to him stories about the old days when the Republic of Venice was a power on the seas.
At that moment, Carlo looked out the window of his store, enjoying the view of the canals of Venice illuminated by the night light. In his imagination, the scenery of La Sensa from years ago came to life. The procession, attended by clerics, dojoists and residents, was heading toward the sea. He felt as if he himself had become a participant in the ceremony. He saw the consecration of the sea, as the clergy offered prayers, and the ship symbolizing Serenissima sailed into the lagoon. The whole city pulsated with life, and he, with the imagination of a writer, wandered through the streets of Venice and accompanied the residents in their joyous celebration.
- Finish that faster or we'll fall asleep on our doorstep," Mauro chuckled with a wince while poking his brother's shoulder.
Awakened from the images of the past, Carlo continued his story.
- La Sensa, my dear friends, is a holiday that combines the spirit of religion, culture and traditions of our beautiful city. It is a day that falls on August 15, when Venetians and visitors gather in the square in front of St. Mark's Cathedral. Mass begins, the celebration of which puts us in a religious mood.
- And in how many nights does this date fall? - asked Alex
- It just so happens that today," replied Mauro.
- During La Sensa, we celebrate not only our faith, but also our history of maritime empire. This celebration has roots dating back to the time of the Venetian Republic, when our fleet ruled the Mediterranean. During the festivities, the traditional ceremony of "Sposalizio del Mare" or , "Wedding to the Sea," takes place. During this ceremony, a ring is thrown into the sea, symbolizing Venice's relationship with the waters.
Alessandra and Luca listened with interest as Carlo continued his story about La Sensa. He smiled seeing the curiosity in the eyes of the strangers and went on with the story.
- Ah, La Sensa is a real spectacle. The square in front of St. Mark's Cathedral is decorated with huge decorations and colorful banners. People are dressed in their finest costumes.
- And how about the grub.... you mean dishes? - fired Luca
- Of course, La Sensa is also a feast for the palate. You can try typical Venetian dishes such as risotto al nero di seppia, or squid rice, or fritto misto, fried seafood. Our cafes and pastry shops also offer traditional sweets, such as frittelle, or doughnuts.
- I already like this party," replied Luca while already being thought of at the food tables.
Carlo continued his story, immersing them even deeper into the atmosphere of La Sensa.
- In the evening, as dusk falls, spectacular pyrotechnic shows are organized on the waters of the lagoon. Fireworks flare in the sky above Venice, creating a picturesque sight that is impossible to forget. All this is done to the accompaniment of music and singing choirs that fill the night with melody.
Alessandra began to imagine this amazing celebration in Venice.
- It sounds like an unforgettable experience. We absolutely must see it dear," she added winking at Alex.
Luca and brother Elias nodded in agreement in advance.
- Yes, that would be a real cultural and culinary trip," muttered Alex under his breath, who was not inherently fond of such rushes.
Carlo smiled again and continued.
- Before La Sensa begins, you can attend a solemn service at St. Mark's Cathedral. This is where the people of Venice combine their faith with the proud history of our city.
They absorbed every word of Carl's story, seeing before their eyes the beauty and richness of La Sensa's traditions. As the evening subsided, the trio decided to attend a formal service. They paid for their costumes and thanked the storyteller then headed toward St. Mark's Cathedral. The sound of bells echoed through the air, drawing crowds of locals and visiting merchants toward the majestic church. When they stepped inside, they were enchanted by the richness and beauty of the place. The mosaics, the golden domes, the frescoes on the walls - all this created an extraordinary atmosphere.
The service began in a solemn manner. The clergymen led the prayers, and the people of Venice took part in the ceremony with full participation. Among the crowd, they also spotted the same couple they had seen earlier. Their presence at La Sensa was proof that they were definitely following them. The choir sang hymns that filled the souls of those gathered with faith and pride in Venice's past.
Standing there among the faithful, they became part of this tradition, albeit briefly. They felt that the place was extraordinary, and that the history of this city lay in every stone of the cathedral. When the service was over, the crowd dispersed around St. Mark's Square, where lanterns were already being lit and preparations were being made for the pyrotechnic show. Elias stayed in the cathedral looking for more clues.
Meanwhile, the Trio, followed by the mysterious couple, moved towards the waterfront, where the magical ceremony took place.
- We are part of La Sensa now," Alessandra said with a smile in Alex's direction, "It's an amazing feeling to be here and now, just like in the old days.
Luca looked at them with a smile shaking his head as if they were a couple in love. Alex contemplatively looking at the starry sky of Venice answered Alessandra.
- Yes. That feeling... Familiar to me perfectly but also completely foreign.
They both witnessed something unique that connected them to the history of the place.
Meanwhile, the fireworks reached their peak, lighting up the night sky with colorful explosions. The sight was unforgettable filled with the magic of the place. Time stopped for them for a moment, and the history of Venice and its mysteries were at hand.
