A Light in The Dark: Part One

Benjamin leaned against the carriage, checking out the crowd across the street, his arms folded comfortably across his chest. His mind drifted back to earlier events. It will soon be dark, he thought. The Larkins had been away for a while, and he was concerned about their safety, given how they left.

“Benjamin, I trust we have not caused you to worry,” Hugh spoke from his horse. “Will you manage the horse alone? I need to hurry along. I still need to stop by the jailhouse to see Mr. Peters. And I worry about leaving Matilda alone.

“I understand, Mr. Larkin. I’ll get the horse hitched to the carriage. Would you like me to pick you up somewhere in town later to take you back to the manor?”

“No, but thank you for asking, Benjamin. You have had enough waiting time for one day,” said Hugh. He quickly dismounted.
