Sweet craving

Silas studied Esme's face, a cocktail of sorrow and self-blame swirling within him. If only he had been more cautious with David, none of this would have happened. Esme wouldn't be haunted by these nightmares.

"Why are you saying sorry? "Taking care of you is what I'm here for. Never think you're a burden." He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

His touch, a steady anchor, chased away the remnants of her terror. Esme nestled closer, seeking solace in his warmth. "What kept you so long?" she mumbled, a hint of childish whine in her voice, a clear attempt to shift the focus. "I waited for you, but you didn't come."

A pang of guilt shot through Silas. The meeting with Caleb had dragged on longer than expected. He should have checked on Esme sooner and ensured she had a peaceful sleep.

"I apologize for that," he murmured, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "It won't happen again. I promise. Now, rest. I'm right here beside you."
