The promise

Esme sniffed, a bitter smile tugging at her lips. Even in this dire moment, Daphne's insecurity clung to her.

"You have my words," she promised. "This will be the last time I call Julian. After this, I'll block his number. I'll pretend I don't know him, even if he appears right in front of me."

"Remember what you said?" Daphne murmured, wincing in pain.

The wail of approaching sirens sliced through the tension. The ambulance doors hissed open and paramedics swarmed Daphne, their movements practiced and efficient.

Esme watched, her heart pounding as the doors closed and the siren wailed. She fumbled for her phone, dialing Julian's number with trembling hands.

"Julian! Come to the hospital right away," she said frantically, her body trembling with fear and adrenaline. "Daphne is injured."
