The main character is focused on becoming strong, but he has family and friends that he wants to protect as well.
The main character has a dark past and has to grapple with it throughout the story. The mana and Magic of the world has a lot to do with emotions.

Surviving An Apocalypse

The next day, Susan and I woke up and gathered all the clothes we had thrown around the mansion. After we had cleaned ourselves off in the shower together, we talked. "So, you want to show me how to fly that fighter plane Zane was talking about yesterday?"

After we got out of the shower, we put our clothes on and headed out the front door before going outside and flying to the roof of the mansion where there were several streamlines looking ships.

We walked up towards the ship and Susan sent a burst of blue light towards the aircraft and two doors opened up. Susan grinned. "Well then, when you get inside the ship, it will connect to your consciousness with a string of Mana. Let the ship skewer you, it ain't an attack."
