A Father's Love

The doctor gave her a look as if he had never seen anyone quite like her before and slowly said, "Indeed, people have died from high fevers, but in your case, you might have ended up with severe mental impairment, unable to care for yourselves."

 

Sarah was stunned, unable to imagine if she and her sister became mentally impaired, who would take care of them? 

 

Would they end up homeless, worse off than the vagrants at every city corner?

 

Seeing her dazed expression softened the doctor's irritation. He was accustomed to the daily dramas of life and death, the tears and separations in the hospital, but these two girls stirred his compassion.

 

The sister had used all her willpower to get her sibling to the hospital, collapsing unconscious and tear-streaked upon arrival, her cheeks flushed and feverishly hot.

 

He was about to go home when he saw them and had to rush them in for treatment.
