Let My Heart Guard You

Sarah Wilson couldn't help but laugh, disbelief tinging her voice. "You're lying. It's Avery you love, not me. Don't try to fool me, you charlatan." She slowly slid to the floor, her head buried deep between her knees, her slender shoulders trembling in a way that was heartbreakingly vulnerable.

Behind her, the doctors stood in a row, watching her; none dared to approach, fearing they might further upset her.

Ella Jackson turned her head away, her tears continuing to fall unchecked.

Elijah Martinez squatted down, his hands gently cradling her fragile shoulders. "Listen to me, Sarah Wilson," he began, his voice steady and sincere.

"I've fallen in love with you. If you don't believe me, I'll go into the operating room with you. If the surgery is successful, I'll marry you. If it isn't, I'll have the doctor take my heart out and give it to you, so it can always protect you. How about that?"
