The Careless One

"What were you doing in there? Why was the door locked?" Avery Miller stood at the open door of the restroom, greeted by the complaining woman who, clutching her stomach, didn't bother to look up as she chastised Avery.

Avery observed her, noticing the woman's forehead creased with urgency. When the woman finally looked up and paused, "You're... you're that girl Derek Mason brought, aren't you?"

She struggled to remember Avery's name, clearly recalling it was English, "I was so worried. Why was the door locked?"

The girl's expression softened slightly at Avery's mild smile, "The door wasn't locked by me."

As the girl was about to enter, she simply acknowledged Avery's explanation with an "Oh," adding, "Must've been someone else then. Who could be so careless!"

Avery glanced back at the closed bathroom door, her lips curling into a faint smile, then quickly exited the restroom.
