"Will your friend come to pick us up?" she asked, shifting the conversation as she looked towards the area Derek had pointed out. Aside from a large stage and a crowd that was beginning to gather, she saw no sign of a car.

 

Derek Mason nodded, "Yes, he said he would be here on time."

 

After he spoke, a flicker of doubt crossed his mind. Given his friend's usual punctuality, arriving early rather than late, today's delay was indeed unusual.

 

"Oh," Avery Miller responded obediently, then suddenly remembered something, "But we could have just waited for them at the airport, right? Why did you have to carry me all this way? You must be tired!"

 

Her words touched a soft spot, and Derek's face warmed with a tender smile.
