Nightmare Awakening

As Mr. Yamada slammed the door and left, Avery Miller slowly opened her heavy eyes. She had heard every word they said, and indeed, as Mr. Yamada had suggested, she could not possibly harbor feelings for him because there was someone else in the world, yearning for her love, waiting just as desperately as she had. Was Ethan Montgomery alright now?

A tear unknowingly escaped her eye. Derek Mason, turning towards her, caught her vacant gaze fixed on the ceiling.

"Avery, you're awake, thank goodness!" Derek exclaimed, grasping her hand, which was as cold as her heart, but it didn't matter to him; he only cared that she was alright.

"Where is Ethan Montgomery?" Avery's eyes, filled with glistening tears, turned towards him.
