Prom King And Queen

Although they expected as much, Samuel and Elizabeth were still pleasantly surprised by the theme and design chosen by the event planners for the prom.

From the stylish tanks with exotic glowing fish at the entrance to the very lighting of the auditorium; everything was simply just spectacular.

Soothing music from the DJ's special selection washed over the crowd as they entered the auditorium.

The ushers led each couple to their assigned tables as well as showed those who were unfortunate enough to be there by their lonesome, to their seats.

The principal, the vice principal and a few teachers entered the auditorium with Alex Smith who was there as the Parent Chaperone for the night.

The teachers and principals were awe struck by the auditorium's design but Alex had a proud look on his face as he glanced from wall to wall of the auditorium, observing all the intricacies of the decorations.

The ushers met them and escorted them to their tables close to the stage. The excited teachers couldn't help but continue to look around the auditorium.

Everything they were currently seeing were leagues better than what had been done in the previous years, after all, all previous proms had been held in the school gym with a minimal working budget.

When the clock struck exactly 7:15pm, the music stopped as Frank Wozowski; the president of the school's journalism club, as well as the Host for the night, took to the stage and cleared his throat into the microphone, drawing the attention of the audience to the stage.

As the MC for the night, he was charged with the duty of making sure everything went on smoothly for the night and he intended to do exactly that.

He officially started the programme by started giving the welcome address to the audience. He then proceeded to introduce the dignitaries present.

At the occasion, ending with the Chaperone for the night, Alex Smith, the regional superintendent of police.

Alex joined him on the stage and briefly greeted them, congratulating them on their status as finalists and wishing them the best on their future endeavours.

Alex returned to his seat amidst a sea of applause from the audience.

Thanking Alex for his words, Frank continued and introduced the student leaders; who, not long ago, had handed over their duties to the newly appointed student council.

He also introduced the Prom committee members upon whose shoulders this prom was being organized.

After a round of applause was given for the committee, Frank invited the principal to the stage to give a few words to the audience.

The principal walked up the stage with a glass of champagne in hand. After a few minutes of congratulating the students and telling them of his wish for their futures, he asked the audience to join him as he raised a toast.

After the toast was made, the crowd gave a cheer as the DJ resumed the music. The host called out to the students to take to the dance floor and they responded promptly.

The finalists swarmed the dance floor, dancing to the beat and rhythm of the music.

The genre of music being played over the speakers dictated the dancing styles exhibited by the students on the dance floor.

The styles changed from dances between couples, to coordinated group dances, to free-styled individual dances.

In their excitement, no one realised the clock was continually ticking and when the clock struck9:00pm, Frank took to the stage once again as the DJ swapped the current song for a mild interlude.

"Alright ladies and gentlemen, the most anticipated time of the night has finally arrived. It's time to crown our Prom King and Queen", he declared as an usher wheeled in a table with two stylish crowns and sashes with the prom king and queen inscriptions boldly indicated on them.

Between the crowns was a black envelope with golden trim edges. "To do us this honour, we invite our principal and our chaperone for this auspicious night", Frank welcomed with applause as the two dignitaries took to thew stage.

Alex picked up the envelope and slowly opened it. All the candidates held their breaths; their hearts in their throats, as they anxiously awaited the words that would decide their fates.

"The Prom King and Queen for this year's batch of students are....", Alex paused as he pulled out the card within the envelope and glanced at it. The entire auditorium was engulfed in deafening silence as they awaited his next words.

"Let's welcome to the stage…our Prom King and Queen… McCollin Johnson and Karen Daniels!!" Alex shouted as the spot lights fell on the couple near the drinks table.

McCollin and Karen almost spat out their drinks in surprise. They turned to the stage, eyes wide in shock, contemplating how this was possible.

With everything that had happened during the previous weeks of voting, they were a hundred percent sure that Samuel and Elizabeth would be the ones to take the crowns. McCollin turned to Samuel, but the latter only gave a wink and a thumbs up in reply.

"McCollin Johnson and Karen Daniels, please join us on stage", Alex called out once again. The couple quickly placed their drinks back on the table and straightened themselves out.

After taking a deep breath, Karen interlocked her arm around McCollins' as the two slowly made their way to the stage amidst a flood of cheers from the crowd.

The couple mounted the stage and turned to face the entire crowd. Following the long handed down procedure, Alex and the principal first picked up the sashes and laid them around their shoulders. Next, they picked up the crowns and held them up above the couple's heads.

They slowly lowered the crowns and upon reaching and settling comfortably on the heads of the royal couple, the auditorium burst into loud cheers as confetti was released unto the stage.

"It's now time for our Prom King and Queen to have their dance", Frank announced immediately after being handed the microphone.

McCollin gently held unto Karen's hand and guided her down the stage to the dance floor; the spotlight following them all the way. The crowd made space in the center for the royal couple as they reached the dance floor.
