Chapter 14: Orange is the Worst

Junie’s breathing hitched nervously and she swore she could hear the gears turning in Kian’s mind as he took in her strange actions.

“Not gonna answer it?” he asked lightly, running a hand down her arm. He noted this time that there were goosebumps forming on her skin, even though it wasn’t cold in his apartment.

Junie shook her head.

Kian couldn’t explain why, but he sensed something was wrong. He shifted so that he could see Junie’s face. “What’s wrong? Who was just calling?”

Her lips tightened. “No one important.”  She cringed when she heard the way her voice sounded. It sounded strained and in pain.

Kian narrowed his eyes. “It sounds like it was someone important,” he said, sensing that he couldn’t let this one go, even though he normally would, knowing full well that Junie didn’t really like to talk about herself.
