No Longer Best Friends

Amelia sat in silence next to Aiden, her mind racing with a thousand thoughts. The five minutes that passed felt like an eternity. She finally mustered the courage to ask, her voice barely above a whisper, "Why did you quit Physics?"

Aiden turned to look at her, his expression unreadable. With blunt honesty, he replied, "I only chose Physics because of you. I thought we could go through it together, study together, and make it all work." He paused, running a hand through his hair as he exhaled deeply. "But I realized that's not what I really want for my future. I'm going to inherit my family's hospital one day, so med school makes more sense."

His words hit her like a cold splash of reality. Amelia had always known Aiden was serious about his future, but hearing him admit that his choice of major had been influenced by her made her chest tighten. She didn't know what to say, the weight of his confession settling between them like an invisible wall.
