Flashback
"Gatlin, do you think we'll always be together?" Allie asks me as we lay in the blanket looking up at the stars.
"I don't think everything lasts forever."
She looks over at me, and I run my finger over her lower lip. I have kissed her more than a handful of times, being a 16-year-old.
"I love you."
I bring my nose to hers, rubbing it against it.
"Alls, I think you know how I feel about you."
"We need to come up with a nickname for you."
"Well, I do hate the name Gatlin."
She laughs.
"Remember when I used to be afraid of the dark, and you used to blow out the candle fire when I fell asleep?"
I nod. I don't think Tara realizes how many times I've been in and out of her room throughout the years.
"Yeah." I nod smiling at the memory.
"I always knew you were there and left because of the smoke, coming from the blown-out candle."
I rub her cheek gently with my hand. Allie is literally the only gem in my life that I try to protect.
"So in my mind, I started calling you Smoke."
"Smoke, I love it."
She lifts herself up, and I feel her head lying on my chest. I gently run my fingers through her hair.
"You're the only person I have in this world, Smoke." I feel a frown in my face hearing her say these words. I know how hard it is to rely on nobody. I'm just hoping that I'm the right man for her.
Allie's story was a little bit like mine. Her mom was also a drug addict, but she was abandoned at the hospital the day she was born. And her father was never in the picture.
I was once allowed letters, and such with my father. There we held a short pen-pal relationship. I guess it was better than nothing, but ultimately my heart turned black towards him.
"Do you think we'll ever get married?"
I rub her back gently. "You could be anything, Alls."
She looks up at me, and I see my reflection in her eyes. And my heart can never disappoint her.
"So could you?"
I feel the smirk on my face, and I chuckle. "We both know you're smarter than me."
"Maybe just a smidgen."
"We will get married one day, but first we're going to work our careers and our goals."
She nods.
"Because I need to provide you with a financially stable life."
She nestles her head into my chest. "All I need is you Smoke."
