The couch depressed beneath me. Vivian stared off into space, her face blank and unreadable. She hadn’t asked about what happened. She’d barely looked at me.
I could understand if she was angry but I wasn’t going to let her carry that.
“Vivian, I know what you saw. It wasn’t what it looked like. I knew she wasn’t you and I was questioning her. She lunged at me and…”
She held a hand up and took a deep breath.
“I should have been more vigilant, more prepared for what she might pull. Vivian, she’s more manipulative than you realize…”
“I get it. After what Marian told me, I know… I don’t blame you.” she glanced in my direction and a strained smile touched her lips.
I reached for her hand and brushed my thumb over her knuckles. She sucked in a sharp breath and her shoulders eyes slightly.
“I never knew…” A rim of tears formed in Vivian’s eyes. Her brow creased.
I squeezed her hand. What could I say to her?
“Never knew what?” I prodded gently.
