Vivian’s hair tickled my chin. Her strawberry scent wrapped around me like a blanket. I kept my arms around her tightly, refusing to let her go. Her body moved slightly with each breath as she recounted her time with Callum and everything he’d told her about his family.

Most of it I already knew but why he hated my family and why he’d chosen to kill Laurel was new information.

Absently, I ran my fingers through Vivian’s dark, curly hair. The strands were like thin silk tickling my skin.

“He was in pain. What happened to his family…” her words trailed off.

“My father had to do it. As you said, he would have been seen as weak, otherwise.”

“I know. I’m not making excuses. Everything he did after that… to Grace, to Laurel, to your brothers… there’s no excuse.”

I dropped my fingers to her cheek and ran the tips along her soft, smooth skin. She tipped her eyes up to me, her body weight pressing down on my chest.
