Odin's Compassion

Hearing those words, Odin clenched his right fist in anger while keeping his head down. The words of the human in front of him felt as if she were stepping on Odin's head.

Although the woman showed those words at Kai, but since Odin was trapped in here. It feels like he also felt that every bad word that others show to Kai as if those directed to him too.

On the other hand, Odin didn't want to get too involved with human relationships, as long as it was not part of the [System]'s assigned mission.

But it did not mean that he would obey the orders of that woman. That would never happen — Odin said to himself.

"F-Forgive me, a-auntie ... but right now I can't do it. Can you forgive me and forget all this? I beg you just for this once," Kai said pleadingly.

For a moment, there was silence between them. Until finally that woman opened her voice.

"Alright. But ..."

SET

Both Odin and Kai instantly widened their eyes when they felt something being forcefully pulled from their necks.

"... I'll take this."

Kai looked speechless, he then

held the chest near his neck with a sad look. Tears were already welling up in his left eye, but he held them back.

In a trembling tone Kai replied, "A-All right auntie ..."

"..."

"Y-You can have it if that's what you want, Auntie," Kai said through his tears.

"Good," the woman replied in haughty, "Now finish your work and make dinner."

Actually, Odin heard clearly what that woman said. However, he still felt confused about what happened between that woman and Kai.

"Sob ..."

However, Kai's voice caught Odin's attention. He really didn't understand this boy. Instead of against that woman, he was crying — Odin thought in wonder.

Odin softly whispered, "Hey kiddo, stop crying —"

"What are you waiting for? You think the house can be cleaned right away just by you standing here, huh?!"

Hearing that, Odin closed his right eye while catching his breath. Be patient — he said to himself.

Meanwhile, Kai tremblingly replied, "F-Forgive me, auntie."

"Just hurry up and do your work!"

After his aunt said so, Kai patted his own thigh, signaling Odin to walk immediately. Meanwhile Odin, he then snorted and walked over the house.

Once inside, Kai immediately directed Odin to get the cleaning tools in the storeroom under the stairs.

Several hours passed, Odin had walked to every corner of the room and let Kai do the cleaning work with his left hand.

All the time, Odin just walked and stood still while watching how Kai did the cleaning work with difficulty holding a vacuum cleaner. Maybe it's because this boy is not used to using his left hand — Odin thought.

A second later, Odin sighs shortly and then says, "Looks like you're having trouble."

However, Kai did not reply and just continued to do his work with a blank stare on his left eye.

Meanwhile, Odin who did not get any response again voiced, "Kiddo —"

"Shut up!" said Kai, cutting off Odin's words.

Kai's reaction caused Odin to fall silent and only frowned as a sign that he did not understand.

"I'm not in the mood to discuss anything now," Kai said again.

It seems the stuff that woman took was something precious to this boy — Odin thought silently.

Hearing Kai's words, Odin chose to remain silent and follow the direction Kai was pointing. Odin also helped Kai a little with the kitchen chores, and then ate a little wheat bread with broth as his dinner.

After doing all these things, Odin thought that this was the reason why this boy had such a weak and skinny body. The pigs ate the meat with gusto, while they would only leave the bones and a hard bread for Kai.

It's disgusting to see how they eat — Odin said to himself while stare at three humans that eat greedily.

Eventually Kai's task for the day was over and his aunt's family had also gone to bed.

As Kai's request, Odin walked into Kai's room and laid his body down on the small hard bed. Then he looked up at the ceiling and thought.

After going through all the bad things up until today, Odin was starting to feel conflicted about his feelings towards humans. Was what he knew about human life not all true? — He wandered inside.

Especially this boy.

Odin could not deny that he felt compassion for this boy who shared his body with him. This boy changed Odin's view of humans a bit.

"Hey, son. I think —"

"That necklace was my first birthday present from my mom," Kai said, cutting off Odin's words.

Hearing Kai's words, Odin chose to listen as he closed his right eye.

"I lost my mother when I was 1 year old," Kai said in a trembling tone, "My aunt said that mom died in a car accident ..."

"..."

"... and because from the beginning my aunt and her husband lived within us here, I became her responsibility after then."

"..."

"You may never understand what it's like because you're just an alter ego that I formed," Kai said as he smiled sadly, "Maybe it's also my form of escape because I'm a coward who always runs away in every problem I face."

"..."

"At the first time I met you, honestly I felt annoyed by your existence. You're the opposite of me. But on the other hand, I can't deny that I feel happy ..." Kai deliberately hung his sentence.

He took a deep breath to hold his tears and then he continued, "At least I'm not alone again ..."

"..."

"At least, I can free myself from fear even if only for a moment ..."

"..."

"At least I can talk well to someone, even though it's all unreal. That's all what I thought," Kai said.

Odin, who had been silent, finally sighed. He never imagined that there would be a human kid who grew up with so many bad things around him.

"Do you believe in miracles?" asked Odin.

Kai smiled wryly and replied, "I believe that miracles are the nonsense of religious leaders."

Odin closed his eyes for a moment and then said again, "If one day you get a miracle from Heaven ..."

"..."

"... what do you think?"

"What do I think?" said Kai and smiled weakly while closing his eyes.

He then continued, "Then I would worship whoever and whatever that gave me that miracle."
