The Other World

"Anati! Anati, what's going on? Open the door!" I panicked, pounding on the bedroom window.

A torrent of terrifying thoughts raced through my mind, each one ending with Anati hurt, or worse. I kept banging on the window, desperate for her to open it.

"Anati! Open the window!" I shouted, slamming my hand harder against the glass.

"Thando, is that you?" Anati's voice was strained, her breathing heavy.

"Yes, it's me. What's happening in there?" I asked, relieved to hear her voice.

"Did you come alone?" she groaned, pain evident in her words.

"Why does that matter right now? Just let me in!"

"Thando, did you come alone?" she repeated, a hint of anger in her tone.

"Yes! I came alone. Just open the window, Anati!" I yelled, banging the window with every word.
